Internet Smiley Usage: Parenthesis

Rule: When writing parenthesis that include a smiley, proper usage is to use the smile part of the smiley as the close parenthesis.

SAMPLE:
correct: You know you do (and I know you do too ;-).
awkward: You know you do (and I know you do too) ;-).
worse: You know you do (and I know you do too)(-;.
acceptable: You know you do (and I know you do too ;).

That's news to me. Did you make that up or is it a real thing?
Well, can't it be both? Let's just say that I noticed inconsistencies around, so decided to define it for my own uses (and yours too if you agree with me :-) See? Isn't that nice!
what about You know you do (and I know you do too ;-)). that seems more proper to me. although ;) is better than ;-) the nose is just so unnecessary.
