the week in review (6/27/04 - 7/3/04)

Caffeine withdrawal is a bitch.

Shadow of a Doubt (1943, Alfred Hitchcock) (v) 81
Still haunted by the film and Macdonald Carey's hair.

Spider-Man 2 (2004, Sam Raimi) (f) 79
Comments forthcoming. Or not. You never know with me. For reference, though, the first Spider-Man is in the low-to-mid 90s, much to the horror (I imagine) of Scott and Matt.

Cries and Whispers (1972, Ingmar Bergman) (v) 63
Rosso, certainly; profondo, unsure.

Where we saw it: week in review | We deign to rate it: outta 100

You are correct, sir.
What a mediocre effort from Raimi. The only interesting thing about SPIDEY 2 in my opinion was the rather odd "Raindrops" sequence. Where the hell did that come from?

Well, I wouldn't call it mediocre, but it is a letdown after the first, and I'm mystified by all "best superhero movie ever" hype. The "raindrops" sequence... I forgot about that part. That was a little weird. There was a lot of little weird bits, weren't there? I oughtta get crackin' on a full entry.

Two friends, John and Odie, went to see "Spiderman 2" without me; John thinks it's better than the first one and Odie has yet to get back to me.

Am I still alone in thinking Tim Burton's "Batman," warts and all, is the best movie superhero (keep in mind this is from someone who hates comic book-like things)?

I'd second that, although I liked UNBREAKABLE more than most people. Christopher Nolan's BATMAN movie has a chance, I think, to be my favorite comic book adaptation, if what I'm reading about it is correct. Regarding SPIDEY 2, I think it's safe to say that you (Matt) will feel about it as I did, based on your review of the original.

Well I will have to wait and see if I agree or not, till next weekend. I opted to see Fahrenheit 9/11 (Movie, documentry, editorial, Bitch fest???) I am looking forward to it none the less. I am with you though I have heard both that it is better then the first and that it is a lack luster effort. The bit of Chesse a la Singing in the rain seems befiting for Sam Rami.
