Bagdad Cafe
IMDB
Joke math: (name of movie + other famous similarly named city) x (overall theme of this movie) / (current political events in famous similarly named city).
Example: Bagdad Cafe is a heartwarming movie about a woman accepting people from other cultures and countries. Before they bombed her cafe, that is.
Note: some jokes may not be more funny ironic, rather than funny ha-ha.

The Day After Tomorrow
IMDB
The Hellbox tally:
-10 for bad science
+0 for liberal bias
+10 for the people ludicrously pissed off by said bias
-10 flash freezing
+10 for pro-Gutenberg bible rant (
I've done one or two myself -- the name "hellbox" should be a dead giveaway)
-10 for Jake Gyllenhaal's sad face reaction to everything
+10 for marauding packs of wolves in frozen NYC
+10 for Ian Holm
+10 for Ian Holm exhorting the virtues of Scotch
+10 for the fine, fine, destruction of Los Angeles sequence
-10 to me for thinking so hard about a B Disaster flick
+10 for going and enjoying myself despite it all

Meteors and Aliens
Last night we were awakened from a dead sleep by a fantastic booming. We thought many things--many sleepy things, but
Christine mentioned that the building or windows weren't shaking. The implication being that it was no earthquake or terrestrial event from nearby. Our building does shimmy and shake at the smallest encouragement.
This news greeted us today. Christine thinks the flash woke her up, while I am sure it was the sound for me.
It reminded me that I was planning to write an entry here as a prediction (always the game of smart men, right?) that as tension over the Bush administration, terrorism and other plaques on the teeth of our new century arise, so will
sightings and interest in UFOs.
I base this utterly baseless prediction on the idea that in times of great tension and paranoia, sightings and "paranormal" events increase. Will I be right? Hopefully so, because maybe then the
Robert Anton Wilson of my gen-x-eration will arise to mock it all with the 21st century version of the
Illuminatus Trilogy.
UPDATE: See Christine's illustration of the event
over at her squeezebox.
